What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown covers a damaged tooth to restore strength, function, and shape, effectively becoming the tooth’s outer surface. Once the crown is cemented into place, it can remain there for many years, looking and behaving just like a natural tooth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Patients usually prefer porcelain crowns because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong.
Who Might Need a Crown or Onlay?
A patient may need a crown or only (partial crown) if the tooth isn’t strong enough to hold a filling. We can either use CEREC technology to create a custom crown for a patient or have a specialized dental lab create one based on the patient’s unique dentition. In both cases, the crown is custom crafted for precise fit and optimal function.
